After a big sleep in we walked to the nearby shops and checked out the Information Centre in Inverloch to find out what we could see and do. David stayed outside with the dogs while I got some tips and maps. It was suggested that the main things to do while we were there were to visit Eagle Nest, Cape Paterson, and the State Coal Mine at Wonthaggi.
Paul the Pieman’s Bakery and Café for lunch
We walked across the road to Paul the Pieman’s Bakery and Café and bought a Pie, Pork and Feta Sausage roll and a lemon curd cheesecake. It was too cold to sit outside anywhere so went back to the cottage to eat lunch. I love country bakeries – they all seem to have delicious pies and cakes – often with a huge selection to choose from.
Eagles Nest
Eagles Nest is a 10 minute drive from Inverloch. The best view from the road is from a cutout just before you get to the turnoff. We discovered this as we wizzed past and it was too late to turn around. No dogs allowed here so we took it in turns to walk the short track from the car park to the rock formation we had seen in photos. I went first and took a couple of shots ( ended up looking a touch like a phallic symbol) and then David went with our new camera and took some more detailed shots.
Some Parks Victoria guys were working on steps that led down the steep side from the car park to the beach.
We drove back to the cutout in the road that I had seen, did a u turn and pulled the car over to take some shots of Eagles Nest. This was a much better view of Eagles Nest than from the carpark
Cape Paterson
Cape Paterson is about a 5 minute drive from Eagles Nest. The dogs were allowed here on leash so we got them out and took them for a walk down to the beach.
There were some crazy people in the distance brave enough to go for a swim. Not for long as the water must have been freezing!
Chapmans Free Range Butchery
There are cows everywhere in abundance chewing on the green pastures throughout the region – so it seemed like a good idea to try some locally grown and nurtured meat. We noticed the sign For Chapmans Free Range Butchery while driving back into Inverloch so stopped to check it out. Dave went in and came out with some steak and sausages.
Steak and onions, and sausages in bread
The steak we bought from Chapmans Free Range Butchery had a little marinade on it, and the sausages were just plain ones. We cooked it up and it was delicious, so much nicer than supermarket meat. The taste of supermarket packaged meat is so different it makes you wonder what magical ingredients they add to make it last.
Music and Fire
Nothing better on a holiday in Winter than a cosy, toasty fire going, a glass of wine and some relaxing music. Helps if its “Keefy” (Keith Urban) singing away in the background
