The story of Alice in Wonderland
Until I experienced the exhibition “Wonderland” I didn’t realise there were so many different “Alice’s” and versions of Alice in Wonderland created.
Discover original concept drawings, short films, slides, props, posters, costumes, first edition publications and illustrations, magic lantern projectors, animation cels, puppets, props and other artwork to do with the theme Alice in Wonderland. This is a really well put together exhibition that is well worth experiencing!
A friend visiting from Perth suggested we go and see “Wonderland” showing at the ACMI. It was a cold and wintry day with rain and hail when we left home. We parked in the Fed square car park and walked a short distance to the museum.
Wonderland | Exhibition Tracing Alice’s evolution on screen at the ACMI
We then walked to the ACMI and purchased tickets to see “Wonderland”. We were able to get into the next available session time without waiting and proceeded down the steps. At the bottom of the steps was a lady who gave us a “Lost Map of Wonderland” and explained how to use it.
Two doors were in front of us – a big one and a little one. We chose the big door and walked through and started weaving our way through doors and the rest of the exhibition.
Alice in Wonderland Sketches, Old Books and Letters
Behind doors were small rooms with old black and white Alice in Wonderland movies, beautiful small sketches of ideas for movies, old books, old letters, paintings, posters and slides. Costumes and sculptures and anything to do with Alice in Wonderland presented in a magical entertaining way.
Some of the rooms had drawers to pull out from the walls and when you look down into it played an Alice in Wonderland movies, or contained special rare books – like the cut down children’s version of Alice in Wonderland.
A Magical Mesmerising Tea Party
One of the last rooms we went in was a “Tea Party”. About 30 people were led into a room with a large table with all white teapots and tea cups and plates arranged neatly. Everyone took a seat and with a brief introduction we were mesmerised by the changing colors on arrangement in front of us and also the background. The projection of images from the ceiling saw the white plates and teacups come to life with individual animations. ( you can see this in the video below – however the effect is much better in real life! )
