From where we were staying we could either walk left or right along the beach. The foreshore is really well maintained with pathways, bbq’s and crocodile warning signs prominently placed however ignored! We could not believe the number of young families and keen early morning sunrise swimmers taking their own calculated risk ( or inability to read or understand warning signs?) and taking a dip in the water where crocodiles had been sighted. A couple of locals claimed they would be more worried about the stingers present in the water than crocodiles. I am not convinced.
To the left of Trinity beach you come come across a private beach with cameras warning no entry to the property. To the right of the beach is a lovely track going up to some rocks where you can see around the corner towards Yorkey’s Knob. It was quite windy the few times we ventured up there and watching the water closely we were able to see some green turtles bopping up for air.
Lunch at Fratelli on Trinity
The limited eating places in Trinity beach lead us to Fratelli on Trinity which turned out to be a great place for lunch. Dave had some lovely penne with a tomato based sauce and I had a generous serve of bruschetta and a chocolate milkshake.
Uber to Palm Cove from Trinity Beach – $20 each way
We had driven through the main esplanade at Palm Cove a couple of times in previous trips to Port Douglas but had never stopped there. We had exhausted eating places in Trinity Beach and decided to get an Uber to Palm Cove and check it out. We did a bit of a bar hop starting on a corner and having a passionfruit cocktail, followed by another bar with a shark repeller cocktail for me and a blackberry Chombard for Dave. (Were not impressed at having to get a key from the bar to access a public toilet. Toilet was gross and handing the key back to the barman brought out the germaphobe in me and I felt like I needed to go and have a shower.) Would not return to this place – ever!
We walked up the esplanade as far as we could looking for a suitable place to have dinner. On the way we stopped at Peppers for happy hour and had a glass of wine and shared some stories with a lovely couple from New Zealand. We then headed back in search of dinner.
Fluked a Daybed at Portofino
We went into see if there were any tables and were happy to wait but luckily a booth style day bed and table became vacant. It was a very comfortable way to eat dinner – Dave was very happy as being able to lounge on soft cushions was great on his sore back.
It was really busy. We had our legs up and got stuck into delicious garlic bread, and prawns ( which would have been enough food). However we still had baby barramundi and lamb shanks to share. Way too much food but a lovely place to have dinner for our last night on holidays.
Palm Cove or Port Douglas?
We prefer Port Douglas. Maybe because we are more mature and blend into the more mature crowd found in Port Douglas. Palm Cove seems to be more young family orientated. One night for dinner in Palm Cove was enough for us!
Absolutely love the strip of shops, bars and restaurants and the Marina in Port Douglas.
