Crocodiles in Port Douglas | Lady Douglas River Cruise

The highlight of the day was going on the Lady Douglas River Cruise and spotting a crocodile in its natural environment. We had seen crocodiles at Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures on a previous visit to Port Douglas but this was a different experience.

Tasty Breakfast at the The Little Larder

It’s easy to decide where to go for breakfast when you are in Port Douglas. The Little Larder is the best place to go for coffee and breakfast (and lunch!) David had poached eggs and bacon, I had a “onesie” poached egg with hollandaise sauce and our friend Jenny had scrambled eggs with salmon. All was perfect – really great food presented well.

Flagstaff Hill Views of  Four Mile Beach, Port Douglas

The Flagstaff Hill Lookout is the place to go to see Four Mile Beach! It is an easy steep walk up to Flagstaff Hill via the road from the main street in Port Douglas. On the way we stopped at the “Island Point Lighthouse” – a short track is hidden behind a sign. You will find magnificent views with boats and yachts sailing past.

Continuing the walk up towards Flagstaff Hill we got to the top and took in the breathtaking views. Great photo opportunities here with lots of tourists coming and going. You can see people walking and swimming in the warm waters of Four Mile Beach. ( Don’t understand the swimming at Four Mile Beach when there are crocodiles in the water – with recent crocodile sightings causing beach closures! We chose to swim in the safety of the swimming pool). We then walked down the tracks and steps to Four Mile Beach. It is a well maintained track with plenty of places to stop and have a rest and take in the views. At one point we stopped and could see a turtle popping its head up near some rocks.

At one point going down the steps from the Flagstaff Hill Lookout we stopped and could see a turtle popping its head up near some rocks.

After our walk we decided to have a drink at Barbados however we got there and they were closed. (Our last trip we had a beer after the walk up to Flagstaff Hill Lookout and back – and it was late morning.) We kept on walking to Hemingway’s Brewery and had a refreshing cider and shared some sweet potato chips and pulled pork and black beans tacos. The sweet potato chips were fantastic!

Lady Douglas River Cruise & BIG Crocodile Spotted on the Banks of the Mangroves

A trip on the Lady Douglas River Cruise is a must do activity if in Port Douglas!  You may or may not see a crocodile on this cruise and either way it is a relaxing, entertaining and informative way to spend 1.5 hours. We chose to go on when the tide was at its lowest as we were told this would increase the chances of seeing a crocodile. The Lady Douglas chugs slowly from the marina to the nearby mangrove channels of Dickson Inlet with the rainforest mountains as a backdrop. The skipper of the boat provided a historical narrative about Port Douglas and pointed out any wildlife along the way.

Luckily for us we saw some baby crocs and one of the biggest crocodiles I have ever seen!

Barbados after 3pm for a Expresso Martini

After the excitement of seeing a crocodile we hopped off the Lady Douglas and headed towards Barbados. Barbados is also located in the marina at Port Douglas and is a perfect spot to relax with a a drink. The views of the water and mountains are amazing and can be seen through the open relaxing layout of Barbados… and you can also see boats/yachts sail past!

Its always hard work with lots of walking on our holidays. Rest and float around the Shantara Resort swimming pool was needed to refresh before going out to dinner. I had booked Salsa Bar and Grill a couple of weeks earlier to make sure we had somewhere special to eat on my Birthday.

Salsa Bar & Grill because It’s My Birthday!

I think I repeated the phrase “It’s My Birthday!” way too much. It was stuck in my head and just kept coming out. Especially when trying to decide whether or not what food to order.

We had a great dinner. The food was excellent. I had some Gnocchi, Dave and Jenny had the fish of the day ” Nannygai”.

A wonderful day with lots of fantastic memories from a day in Port Douglas.
