Beachport, SA – Beautiful Beaches, Jetty, & Great Donuts

A relaxing holiday in Beachport, South Australia

The aqua color of the water at Beachport and the long Jetty are a memorable sight and why we chose to have a holiday in this magnificent location. With the Jpod unpacked and set up at Beachport Caravan Park as our base for our holiday in Beachport. It was great to be able to take the dogs for lots of little walks to the nearby beach throughout the day. They love being able to run around on the sand and in and out of the water. We had a variety of weather conditions from hot, cold, rainy to extremely windy.

Lions Club cinnamon donuts in Beachport – delicious!

It’s always fun exploring the surroundings when you are at a new holiday destination. A few minutes walk from the Beachport Caravan Park, near the jetty is a little shopfront in the middle of the grassed area with volunteers from the Lions Club cooking hot cinnamon donuts. We had them a few days in a row – they are delicious-  hot soft and fluffy!

Location of supermarkets in and around Beachport

There is not much in the way of shops and restaurants in Beachport. ( also limited as to where you can go if you have dogs). There is general store, a bakery, a few restaurants, op shop, small cinema, and a pub. There is no butcher or large supermarket in Beachport and so what is on offer is limited and expensive.

We discovered that the closest big supermarket to Beachport is a Woolworths in Millicent. Great for meat, fresh produce and other things that you may need. After a drive to Millicent we came back and went for a walk to the Beachport bakery and had lunch.

Dog walks and sunrises in Beachport

Thursday 10th January 2019

When the dogs woke up they wanted a drink and we would take them for a quick walk across the road to the beach. We did this everyday and discovered that the sunrises are absolutely beautiful in Beachport.

There is a lovely bakery in Beachport and we had lunch there and bought small loaves of freshly baked bread. Around the corner from the bakery is the Beachport information centre. I dropped in and got some ideas of things to do when staying in Beachport and picked up some maps and brochures.

The Obelisk in Robe

Friday 11 January 2019

We went for a drive to Robe with plans to see the obelisk and to check out Long Beach. The obelisk is a striking looking red and white structure and with a height of 12m makes it visible 20km out to sea. The erosion of the land surrounding the obelisk is a problem being addressed, which means that you can’t get up very close due to massive ugly fences blocking any access. This is not apparent when you park in the carpark. The paths are well made leading to the obelisk. With the promise of thinking that we could get some great photos of the coastline we took the dogs as close as we could. It was very disappointing to find massive fences and no way of getting photos of the coastline beyond. We still managed to get some great photos of the obelisk from a different vantage point.

We headed off after seeing the Obelisk and had a yummy lunch at the Union Cafe in Robe. We then went to checkout a fresh seafood place that had been recommended to us by the Beachport Caravan Park owners. We bought a couple of white fish fillets that had been caught earlier in the day. We fried up the fillets in the small fry pan with some butter ( a lot of butter!). The fish was soft, juicy and delicious!

After dinner we took the dogs for another walk on the beach. As the sun set the sky turned pink and purple – very spectacular.

Windy Beachport

Saturday 12th January 2019

We didn’t drive anywhere and our activity for the day was a walk to the Jetty. Had a day sitting around relaxing and just doing nothing.

More fresh fish, a visit to Long Beach and Robe Market

Sunday 13th  January 2019

Long Beach in Robe was a place we had missed seeing on our previous trips. Driving onto Long Beach was a great feeling- and what a spectacular view! South Australia and Western Australia have so many beautiful beaches that you can drive on. According to the Beachport Tourist information lady most visitors don’t drive far enough once they get to Robe and completely miss it. ( Like we did ) It is an absolutely beautiful beach and the weather was perfect. We slowly drove along on the very hard sand, and parked the Jeep. We got out and took the dogs for a splash in the water. There were plenty of families set up with picnics, tents and water toys for a full day on the beach.

After the visit to Long beach we drove back to Robe and had lunch at the bakery. The Robe market was on and we had a wander around.  The fish we had bought in Robe was so good we went back to get more. The fish of the day was different to the other day and just as nice.

Salmon Hole, Beachport and Bowman Scenic Drive

Monday 14th January 2019

Not far out of Beachport along the scenic drive we found a place called Salmon Hole. A beautiful spot for swimming. There were also people having fun sliding down the steep sand. We got the dogs out of the car and took them for a little walk.

We drove as far as we could along Scenic Drive and then turned around and came back. Lovely views of the Southern Ocean along the windy coastal road.

Southend

Tuesday 15th January 2019

We drove to Millicent to do another food shop. We checked out Southend which we thought was like the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria.

Rocky on one side, and calm on the other. Very Pretty beaches.

Woakwine Cutting – an amazing man made watercourse

Wednesday 16th Jan 2019

Woakwine Cutting located approximately 12kms from Beachport, was constructed by Mr Murray McCourt in 1957 in order to drain a large swamp on his property. The work was undertaken by 2 men, and was completed in under 3 years with the aid of a caterpillar d7 tractor, a 7 ton drain ripper, scraper and explosives. The cutting is 1 km in length, 30 metres at its deepest point, 3 metres width at the bottom, and entailed the removal of 276,000 cubic metres of material.

A parking bay and viewing platform is provided and the machines used to dig the cutting are on display.

Fish and Chips for dinner

Today was our last full day in Beachport. We packed up as much as we could and had an easy dinner – fish and chips. We sat at the table outside in the main street while the dogs sat happily under the table.

All good holidays must come to an end

Thursday 17th January 2019

With a quick pack up of the last few things it was time to hook up the Jpod and head back to Melbourne. Not so easy. The hook up didn’t want to happen. Our helpful experienced caravan park neighbour came to help with lots of suggestions. With a squirt of WD40 and a bit of adjusting the Jeep to line up to the Jpod the tow bar –  we finally got a hook up and were on our way.
